Jammu Katra Weather, Temperature and Climatic Conditions

Climate is an important aspect in planning any kind for travel for a pleasant and memorable trouble free holiday.

Mata Vaishnodevi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir is visited by millions of devotees every year and their count is increasing every year.

Climate consideration is an important aspect there as there is thirteen kilometer trek to the temple from Katra which take 6 to 10 hours. There is no motor able road beyond Katra towards the Vaishnodevi shrine. Added to this the temple is situated in the Trikuta hills at a much higher place than Katra.

Katra town in Jammu and Kashmir is located at an altitude of around 751 meters) above mean sea level where as the shrine of Vaishno Devi has an altitude of 1560 meters above mean sea level. As this height difference is more than double there is a significant climate difference between the two locations. So considering the climatic conditions at Katra alone and ignoring the climate at the shrine can be a big mistake as both these places are visited in a short span of 6 to 10 hours.

As a thumb rule reduce 10 degrees C from the actual temperature at Katra that would be at the shrine. If the maximum temperature at Katra is 30 degree Celsius then the temperate at the shrine will be 20 degree Celsius.

So keep this in mind before planning your trip to Mata Vaishno Devi.

Clothing requirement

Light summer clothing is advised in the summer months at Katra and light woolens may be necessary at the shrine sometimes if the weather is not sunny

Moderate to heavy woolens are suggested in the winter months at Katra and heavy woolens at the shrine.

Tip

Blankets are available free of charge to use at the shrine by the shrine board after depositing security money.
